Mattress Buying Guide for 2020: Don't Miss Out On Key Points

Replacing a mattress is an exhausting and stressful task. If you are not checking out the various local showrooms you can ask for recommendations from friends and acquaintances. Moreover, there is a whole lot of information available online on the types of mattresses, budgets, brands, models, etc. Navigating through this noise and getting the best mattress is quite a challenge. Moreover, the ‘best’ for one may not be the best for another, as purchasing a bed should be based on your preferences and needs. Here is a mattress buying guide that will help choose the right mattress for a good night’s sleep:

When to Replace your Old Mattress

A major section of people sleeps on a mattress that is not right for them or is outdated. If you are not sure if your mattress needs to be replaced, here are a few pointers that help you decide:

  • Age of the mattress: If your bed has had a life of about 8 to 9 years and is no longer offering the same comfort as before, then it has to be changed.

  • Wear and tear: Take a look at the mattress and see if there are any deformations, sags, dips, etc. If even after flipping and rotating it is not providing proper support then it needs replacement.

  • Spending restless nights: A good mattress reduces pains and aches and supports better sleep. If either of this is happening, you are waking up feeling stiff or are restless at night. Then the mattress is no longer supportive.

  • Has your body size or sleeping preferences changed: Pregnancies, injuries, growth, etc can change the way you sleep and can affect the sleep experience. If your body or your sleeping preference has changed from the last time you brought your mattress, you should consider replacing it.

Choosing the Right Mattress

Types of Mattress: The types of mattress is dependent on the material used for manufacturing it. Some of the common mattress types are foam, innerspring, and adjustable. Innerspring is the least recommended as they are made of coil and springs and they are not suited for comfortable sleep in the long run. The memory foam is an all-foam construction that has many advantages. It uses the heat and pressure generated by the body to conform to the body. A good quality memory foam provides great contouring and slow response to pressure providing good support to the body.

Size: To choose the right mattress size consider factors like space availability, body size, and if you are sharing it. Based on these factors you can choose from one of these sizes:

  • Twin: It is recommended for tall individuals and who are looking to conserve space. It is also called a single bed: It is an ideal size for a kids' room as it is wide enough for one person to sleep comfortably.

  • Diwan: It is also called a double bed. It is good for single sleepers who like to have plenty of space while sleeping. It can also be used by couples if they are ready to compromise on space.

  • Queen Size: The most popular choice of couples as it offers enough space for two people to sleep comfortably. It also fits most standard size bedrooms and hence considered an ideal choice.

  • King size: If you have a large enough bedroom and want to have the luxury of space while sleeping then a king is a good choice.

  • Back sleepers: Look for a mattress that supports the natural spinal alignment and reduces pressure on the back.

  • Side sleepers: The body weight is rested on the narrow surface of the body and hence additional softness is needed to alleviate pressure. A mattress with pressure relief is ideal for such sleepers.

  • Stomach sleepers: The spine alignment is lost when people sleep in this position, hence a firmer mattress will provide enhanced support.

Durability: A higher price does not mean better quality. Some materials are more prone to wear and tear and hence are not durable enough. A memory foam mattress is considered as a durable material as it lasts longer and is less prone to wear and tear as it has no inner coils or springs. Even in a memory foam mattress, the quality of the foam is important. Some mattress manufacturers like Wakefit use high-quality foams and hence are more durable than others who use low-quality foams.

Firmness: A mattress should have a perfect combination of softness and comfort. Beds that have a good support system are firmer but provide better comfort. The firmness of the mattress should be decided based on the sleeping position and the body type. A person who weighs more than 200 pounds should opt for a firmer mattress to prevent sinking and the creation of pressure points. Whereas a lightweight person should choose a softer mattress to add extra cushion.

As per the mattress reviews and mattress buying guide 2020, there are a few other things which are a deal-breaker for many. It is lack of motion isolation, heat dissipation, excessive noise, lack of edge support, lack of hypoallergenic properties, and excessive sinking. When you are selecting a mattress take into consideration all the above-mentioned things to buy the perfect mattress.
