An Ode to the Technology used in our Memory Foam Mattress

How did a material developed in 1966 by NASA for aircraft cushions turn into the most popular mattress in the world? On National Science Day, today’s post is our ode to how technology transformed memory foam into the best bedding material loved by sleepers across the globe.

The History

Under a contract by NASA, memory foam was developed in 1966 in an attempt to enhance the safety of cushions used in aircraft. The material was commercialized later for medical equipment and sports equipment, most popular ones being X-ray table pads and football helmet liners.

In the 1980s, NASA released this material to the public. Most companies chose not to work with the product as it was considered both complex and erratic as a bedding material. In 1991, Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress took the challenge and used the material for their mattresses. Since then the journey of memory foam mattresses has been one of many successes that involved incorporating newer technologies to overcome its weaknesses and turning them into its strength.

The Journey

Of all the stories of how memory foam mattresses became the best bedding material for sleepers around the world, the one about making the mattress temperature neutral needs to be repeated.

Initially, memory foam mattresses were criticized for their inability to offer heat ventilation. It was observed that these mattresses tended to absorb the body heat of the sleeper and trap it, thus making the sleeping experience uncomfortable, especially during summers.

To overcome this problem of heating up, leading memory foam mattress brands included various cooling technologies in their design, such as gel memory foam, heavy quilting, cooling crystals, and memory foam with open cell structure. Today, a memory foam mattress easily circulates the body heat that it absorbs, thus allowing the sleeper to sleep comfortably through the night.

Wakefit Orthopedic Memory Foam Mattress

By making further improvements to the NASA technology, we at Wakefit have created the ultimate memory foam mattress that knows your exact pain points, and so, offers superior comfort and support.

Uniquely designed, here’s how the four different layers of our Orthopedic Memory Foam Mattress provides the ultimate sleeping experience to our customers:

Open cell CoolFit foam

To keep you cool as you sleep comfortably on our mattress enjoying all its other features, we have introduced an open cell CoolFit foam at the top. The cell structure offers breathability by allowing air to pass through it at all times.

Memory foam

The most important layer of the Wakefit Ortho mattress, the memory foam layer offers perfect body contouring by adapting to your body shape.

Zonal support transition layer

By distributing your bodyweight uniformly, our Ortho mattress will give the heaviest parts of your body more firmness and greater support, while providing lighter parts just the right amount of support they need. The zonal support transition layer ensures that your spine is not bent in an unnatural way during sleep, thus improving your posture over time.

Base foam

The final layer, the base foam is what carries the entire show on its shoulders. It offers the necessary support to the entire mattress, which in turn, provides the necessary firmness to your body during sleep.
